Palliative Care Physician

JOB TITLE: Palliative Care Physician

DEPARTMENT: House Calls

REPORTS TO: Practice Manager

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

JOB SUMMARY:

Primary scope of work includes palliative care, or hospice care; or may be a blended role of palliative care and

hospice care. For palliative care the location of work may range from inpatient and community based. Primarily

focused on an inpatient setting, the Palliative Care Physician provides the full scope of palliative care services

which fall under his/her field of training, including but not limited to diagnosis, treatment, coordination of care,

pain and symptom control and other health maintenance to patients suffering from life threatening and severe

illness. In addition, a Palliative Care Physician is a member of the Providence Care team. In that capacity they

are expected to be familiar with the philosophy, goals and objectives of the Agency and work collaboratively to

achieve them. They must be cognizant of, and comply with, all Providence Care policies and procedures, as

well as pertinent state and federal regulations.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Provision of direct patient care and consultation including patient and family counseling and symptom

management related to life limiting and/or life-threatening conditions.

 Collaboration with interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers and

chaplains.

 Planning patient care for treatment of patient, ensuring continuity of care.

 Preparation and maintenance of accurate patient records/charts/documents to support sound medical

practice and reimbursement for services.

 Building effective relationships with hospitalists and other physicians and referral sources to ensure

excellent team follow-up.

 Proactive identification of opportunities to innovate in care delivery in order to improve the patient and

caregiver experience of care for serious illnesses.

 Assist with developing curricular materials and participating in the education of other medical

professionals.

 Applying principles of medical ethics in the practice of serious illness care and shared decision-making.

 Prescribe medication in accordance with South Carolina statute and professional practice guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Doctor of Medicine degree or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine degree from an accredited institution

 Completion of an accredited United States Residency Program

 Valid and unrestricted license in the State of South Carolina

 Valid, unrestricted DEA licensure

 Board certification in palliative / hospice medicine

 Insurability (malpractice)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

On occasion, supervises students in training at Providence Care as assigned by the Medical Director.

Supervises mid-level practitioners (nurse practitioners). / MD / DO only

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to manipulate

objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift

and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities

required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to

adjust focus. Noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
