This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite in La Jolla and remote.

DESCRIPTION

The Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) is an NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) institution that provides the infrastructure to support high-quality and innovative translational research. ACTRI's vision is to translate scientific discoveries into improved health by delivering education, training, and infrastructure for clinical research in the San Diego area and beyond. Mike Hogarth, M.D. and Davey Smith M.D. are the principal investigators on ACTRI's CTSA grant. The ACTRI functions under the direction of Dr. Smith, M.D., Director and Assistant Vice Chancellor of Clinical and Translational Research at UC San Diego.

The Center for Computational Biology & Bioinformatics (CCBB) in the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) provides bioinformatics support for UCSD investigators and affiliated institutions, training of scientists in computational biology and bioinformatics, and the development of novel algorithms for large-scale bioinformatics datasets. A special focus is on the analysis of next generation sequencing data, especially in the context of translational medicine.

The incumbent serves as a bioinformatics programming professional within the Center for Computational Biology & Bioinformatics (CCBB) at UC San Diego. Working under general supervision, the incumbent applies established computational and statistical methods to support a variety of genomics and transcriptomics research projects.

Responsibilities include performing routine and moderately complex analyses of next generation sequencing (NGS) datasets such as bulk RNA seq, single cell RNA seq, whole genome sequencing, epigenomic profiles, and microbiome data. The incumbent assists with processing, quality control, and interpretation of large scale datasets, and contributes to the development and refinement of analysis workflows in high performance and cloud computing environments.

The role involves building and maintaining reproducible pipelines using tools such as Nextflow and containerized environments. The incumbent supports data management activities, including data organization, secure data transfers, documentation of analysis steps, and adherence to best practices for reproducibility.

Under the guidance of CCBB leadership, the incumbent contributes to project reports, figures, and documentation, and provides technical assistance to CCBB collaborators implementing production level bioinformatics workflows for research and translational applications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Six years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor's degree in related area plus two years of related experience/training.
• Working knowledge of bioinformatics methods and data structures.
• Working knowledge of applications programming and web development.
• Working knowledge of databases.
• Working project management skills.
• Working knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research.
• Interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
• Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
• Self motivated, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills.
• Working knowledge of application and data security concepts.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Demonstrated ability to foster collaboration, build partnerships, and communicate effectively across diverse stakeholders.
• Working knowledge of key issues and concepts in translational research and translational science and areas of program evaluation, impact assessment, and statistical analyses.
